Intego ONE review

Intego ONE replaces the company’s collection of separate X9 utilities with a more unified Mac security product. Depending on the plan, it combines real-time antivirus protection, an application-aware firewall, SmartClean optimisation and a VPN. The Complete plan also extends selected security and privacy tools to an iPhone.
The central question is no longer whether five separate X9 applications provide enough features. It is whether Intego ONE offers the right combination of protection and maintenance without making the Mac more complicated than it needs to be.
Three Intego ONE plans
Intego ONE is available in three levels. Essential includes antivirus and firewall protection. Advanced adds SmartClean for storage cleanup and optimisation. Complete adds the VPN and iPhone tools. The exact plan matters because product pages may describe all four main functions even though they are not included at every level.
- Essential: antivirus and firewall.
- Advanced: antivirus, firewall and SmartClean.
- Complete: antivirus, firewall, SmartClean, VPN and iPhone protection tools.
Users who only want malware protection and network control should start with Essential. Advanced is relevant when reclaiming storage is genuinely useful. Complete makes sense when the VPN and iPhone coverage would otherwise require another subscription.
Antivirus protection
Intego ONE provides real-time scanning designed for macOS. It monitors files as they are accessed, quarantines suspicious material and supports scheduled and custom scans with a visible history. External drives and USB storage can also be checked.
Good security software should operate quietly in the background, but a first full scan can still use processor and disk resources. The previous X9 product had a clean interface and provided clear scan controls, although a full scan had a noticeable impact on the Mac used for that historical test. That observation cannot be treated as a benchmark for the redesigned ONE application.
Firewall and network decisions
The firewall controls network traffic and can apply readable rules to individual applications. This is more informative than a simple on-or-off switch: an unfamiliar process attempting a connection can be allowed, blocked or investigated.
The user remains part of the security model. Approving every prompt removes much of the benefit, while blocking an essential service can stop an application from working. The defaults should suit most people; custom rules are most valuable to users who understand which connections their applications require.
SmartClean
SmartClean is included from the Advanced plan upward. It searches for material that may be removable and helps reclaim storage. This can be convenient on a nearly full Mac, but cleanup totals should not be confused with guaranteed performance improvements. Caches are often recreated, and files should be reviewed before deletion.
SmartClean replaces the role previously filled by Washing Machine X9. The name and interface have changed, so screenshots from the earlier application should not be presented as if they show Intego ONE.
VPN and iPhone tools
The Complete plan adds Intego’s VPN. It encrypts traffic between the device and the VPN server, masks the public IP address and includes a kill switch. A VPN is useful on untrusted networks and for limiting what the local internet provider can observe. It does not make someone anonymous and cannot prevent information being entered into a fraudulent website.
Complete also covers selected iPhone functions: VPN access, Wi-Fi safety and speed checks, and a review of security settings. Apple restricts the type of system-wide malware scanning possible on iOS, so this should not be described as a conventional desktop antivirus running on the iPhone.
What disappeared with X9?
Intego ONE is a successor to Mac Premium Bundle X9, not a direct collection of every former component. Personal Backup and ContentBarrier are not listed among ONE’s four main Mac tools. Anyone who relied on X9 for scheduled backups or parental filtering should arrange replacements before moving to ONE.
Time Machine can cover ordinary Mac backups, but important data should also have a separate or off-site copy and restore tests. For family controls, compare Apple’s current Screen Time features with the requirements of each child rather than assuming that ONE inherits ContentBarrier.
Compatibility
Intego states that ONE requires macOS 12.4 or later, an Intel or Apple-silicon processor, at least 8 GB of memory and 2 GB of available storage. Sixteen gigabytes of memory is recommended for the best performance. These requirements are higher than those of the older X9 suite, which supported much older macOS releases.
This matters for an ageing Mac. Do not remove a working X9 installation until the Mac meets the ONE requirements and the replacement plan contains the functions you need.
Independent protection test
AV-TEST evaluated Intego ONE 1.2.3 on macOS Tahoe 26.3 in March 2026. It received 6 out of 6 for protection, performance and usability. The product detected 100% of the widespread and prevalent malware in the reference set, generated no false warnings in the usability tests and matched or closely followed the industry average in the performance measurements.
This is a strong result for the tested version and platform. It does not independently assess SmartClean, VPN quality or the iPhone tools, and no laboratory result guarantees that every future threat will be detected.
Subscription and value
Intego sells ONE as an automatically renewing subscription. Introductory offers can differ from the later renewal charge, the number of protected devices and the selected plan. Compare the renewal amount shown at checkout, not only the initial discount.
Essential offers the clearest value when antivirus and firewall protection are the priority. Advanced is only worth the extra cost if SmartClean will be used. Complete should be compared with the combined cost of an independent VPN and any iPhone service already in place.
Pros
- Unified successor to Intego’s separate X9 security applications.
- Mac-focused antivirus with scheduled, custom and external-drive scans.
- Firewall provides understandable controls for individual applications.
- Excellent AV-TEST result for version 1.2.3 on macOS Tahoe.
- Three plans avoid making every customer pay for cleanup and VPN tools.
- Supports both Intel and Apple-silicon Macs.
Cons
- The latest ONE release was not independently tested for this review.
- SmartClean, VPN and iPhone tools require more expensive plans.
- Personal Backup and ContentBarrier from the former X9 bundle are not direct ONE components.
- Cleanup suggestions and firewall prompts still require user judgment.
- macOS 12.4 and 8 GB of memory exclude some Macs that could run X9.
- Automatic renewal can cost more than the introductory offer.
Verdict
Intego ONE is a more coherent product than Mac Premium Bundle X9. Its strongest case is the combination of Mac-specific antivirus and a controllable firewall, supported by an excellent March 2026 laboratory result. Essential is therefore the most straightforward recommendation for users who want added protection without unnecessary utilities.
Advanced and Complete require a more personal calculation. SmartClean is convenient rather than essential, while the VPN is valuable only if it replaces another paid service. Existing X9 users should also account for the loss of Personal Backup and ContentBarrier. ONE modernises Intego’s core protection successfully, but it is not a feature-for-feature upgrade from the old bundle.
