CleanMyMac review

CleanMyMac review review

CleanMyMac has moved beyond the X generation

MacPaw now calls the application CleanMyMac. The X remains in the name of the older product generation and in parts of MacPaw’s legacy support documentation, but it should no longer define a current buying decision. At the time of this update, MacPaw lists version 5.5.7, released on 22 July 2026, and requires macOS 11 or later for the current application.

The basic idea remains familiar: combine disk cleanup, application management, maintenance, malware scanning and storage analysis in one approachable Mac utility. The attraction is convenience. The caution is that several tools can delete data or change startup and background behaviour, so the quality of the review screen matters more than the size of the headline storage figure.

Interface and first impressions

The redesigned interface was the first thing that stood out in my original test. It looked polished, the categories were easy to follow and the application made a broad collection of maintenance tools feel less intimidating. That remains one of CleanMyMac’s strongest ideas: it translates many separate housekeeping jobs into a visual workflow.

The interface tested for the original review. The current CleanMyMac release has since evolved.

Ease of use should not be confused with complete automation. A maintenance app can only infer which downloads, caches, duplicate-looking photographs or old files still matter to you. I therefore prefer to inspect the proposed actions before allowing a cleanup, even when the app presents one large confirmation button.

Smart Care and the everyday workflow

The older review described Smart Scan as the flagship feature. In the current product MacPaw calls the combined routine Smart Care. According to the developer, it can clean junk, scan for potential threats, run performance tasks, check software updates and help declutter storage. That is a broader workflow than the Smart Scan shown in the historical screenshots.

In my earlier use, scanning was straightforward and the results arrived quickly enough to keep the process practical. The useful part was not simply pressing Clean; it was being able to open the result categories and decide what should go. Scan time and recovered space depend heavily on the Mac, its storage and its history, so the earlier experience should not be treated as a universal benchmark.

Scan results should be reviewed as a proposal, especially before removing caches or personal files.

Cleaning without removing useful data

CleanMyMac can identify caches, logs, temporary material, mail data and other files that may reclaim storage. This can be useful on a Mac that has accumulated years of application leftovers. It does not follow that every detected file is harmful or unnecessary. A browser cache, for example, exists partly to avoid downloading the same resources repeatedly. Clearing it may solve a problem or recover space, but it can also make the next browsing session slower.

The same caution applies to photographs. In the original test, the photo-related scan produced a long list because I keep many similar images and edited variants. Files can look redundant to an automated comparison while representing deliberate stages of an edit. Inspect previews, file locations and dates, and keep a backup before removing a large selection.

The category view is more valuable than a single total because it lets you inspect what CleanMyMac found.

Uninstaller and software updates

The Uninstaller performed well in my test and found the application files I expected from dedicated uninstall utilities. It was convenient to remove an app and associated support files from one place. I would still examine the list when an application stores presets, templates or user-created material in its support folder.

The updater was another useful addition. It collected available application updates and showed release information, reducing the need to open every application separately. Mac App Store software still relies on Apple’s update route, and some developers use their own installers. CleanMyMac can therefore provide a helpful overview without replacing every vendor’s update mechanism.

The updater brought disparate application updates into one readable view during the original test.

Maintenance and performance tools

The maintenance section groups tasks such as managing login items and running selected system routines. In my original use, completing the chosen tasks could take some time, but the interface explained the available choices clearly. These tools are most useful for diagnosing a specific issue or managing background activity; they are not a reason to run every maintenance action on a fixed schedule.

Claims that a cleaner will make every Mac faster deserve restraint. Removing files mainly creates free storage. Disabling an unnecessary login item can reduce background work, and dealing with a runaway process may improve responsiveness, but deleting a cache does not automatically improve processor or graphics performance. CleanMyMac’s value lies in making these controls accessible and showing where storage and resources are being used.

The maintenance panel collects several system tasks, but each should answer a concrete need.

Malware and privacy

CleanMyMac includes malware scanning and removal, while its privacy tools can clear selected browser and application traces. In the original review I regarded the malware module as a useful additional layer, but I could not independently evaluate its detection database. That limitation still matters: this was not a controlled antivirus test and the article should not claim comprehensive detection or an absence of false positives.

MacPaw currently presents threat scanning as one of Smart Care’s five routines. Whether it should be your only security product depends on the protection, reporting and controls you require. Avoid running several real-time security products together without checking compatibility, because overlapping scanners can introduce conflicts and extra system load.

CleanMyMac review
The protection module was easy to operate, although this review did not measure its detection rate.

Storage map and large files

Storage analysis is one of the most understandable parts of the package. A visual map and lists of large or old files can reveal downloads, archives and video projects that are difficult to notice in Finder. The application can help locate them; only the owner can decide whether they are disposable.

CleanMyMac review
Large-file and storage views support a decision; they should not make it automatically.

Compatibility and purchase options

MacPaw’s current product page lists CleanMyMac 5.5.7 and macOS 11 or later, with 320 MB of storage and a minimum 1200 × 800 display. Owners of older Macs should check the separate legacy-version documentation rather than assume that the current download will run.

Both subscriptions and one-time purchases are available through MacPaw, while Setapp includes CleanMyMac among its collection. Store, region, number of Macs and promotions affect the amount charged, so the fixed prices in the older article have been removed. A one-time licence remains tied to compatibility with the purchased major version; future major upgrades may carry a separate upgrade price.

Pros and cons

ProsCons
Polished, approachable interfaceDeletion suggestions still require judgement
Combines cleanup, app management and storage toolsPerformance benefits depend on the actual problem
Useful Uninstaller and update overview in the original testMalware effectiveness was not independently benchmarked here
Good visual explanation of storage useFull functionality requires a paid plan or purchase

Verdict

CleanMyMac’s strongest quality is presentation. It brings scattered maintenance and storage tasks into a coherent interface and makes the result of a scan easy to inspect. My original experience with the Uninstaller, updater and category views was positive, and the seven screenshots still document why the application felt unusually approachable.

The product is best treated as a toolbox rather than an automatic cure for a slow Mac. Review proposed deletions, keep a backup and use maintenance actions to solve an identified problem. With that discipline, CleanMyMac is a capable option for people who value convenience and visual clarity. Advanced users who already manage storage, launch items, updates and security with separate tools may find less value in the bundle.
